Learn a Trade, Enroll in SAHBA Trade School

Applications for the 2008-2009 class of The SAHBA Institute of Construction (TSIC) are now being accepted. Created and managed by the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association, the one-year-long, tuition-free trade school will accept only 50 students.

Students must be 18 years and older, drug-free, read and write English, and want full-time employment in the construction industry.

TSIC consists of two teaching components: on-site fieldwork and in-classroom instruction. The fieldwork is similar to a paid internship. Students work with eight different trade contractors for six weeks each at minimum wage ($6.90/hour). Field experience can include plumbing, electrical, HVAC, concrete, masonry, framing, finish carpentry, drywall, stucco, insulation, and painting.

Classroom instruction is held at SAHBA two nights a week. Subjects include construction principles, building materials, blueprint reading, estimating, and construction management.

“Applicants must be willing to make a one-year commitment to the program,” said SAHBA President Ed Taczanowsky. “We've made the commitment to educate them for free and we expect their dedication in return.”

The fourth TSIC class will begin in October. TSIC applications are available at SAHBA (2840 N. Country Club), by calling (520) 795-5114 or at sahba.org , under Careers. Enrollment deadline is September 15.

SAHBA represents about 750 member firms and 40,000 professionals serving the residential construction industry.
