SAHBA Blueprint August 2007
TSIC Trade Partners Needed; Get 5 Benefits in Return!
As the second class of The SAHBA Institute of Construction (TSIC) nears its end, TSIC is seeking trade partners for the next class that begins in October. Typically, employer participants hire students for a series of six-week periods.
“If SAHBA members are interested in being an employer participant, they can expect our temporary student workers to be eager to learn, dependable, and anxious to actively participate,” said Les Wolf, Program Administrator. “This is an excellent way for companies to evaluate a potential long-term employee, who is hirable upon graduation.”
TSIC teaches students eight trades such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, concrete, masonry, framing, finish carpentry, and one elective (drywall, stucco, insulation, painting, etc.). The on-site work is similar to a paid internship. Students work 40-hour weeks at minimum wage and attend classes two nights a week at SAHBA.
Contractors benefit by:
Helping educate the future work force
No long-term commitments to/from students or employers
Participating at a low-cost investment
Supporting SAHBA and the industry
Having the opportunity to hire students upon successful program completion
“This program benefits not only the industry, but the community and students equally,” said Wolf, Owner of L.G. Wolf Company.
“If you own or manage a trades company, I urge you to support SAHBA's trade school as an employer. The six-week work cycle allows you to try TSIC on a trail basis. There is little financial risk with a huge upside, the opportunity to find future workers,” said SAHBA President Ed Taczanowsky.
Privately funded by SAHBA, TSIC is run by Wolf, a 35-year Tucson builder and former instructor at Pima Community College.
