Give Your A/C a Check up Now
Relationships between homeowners and air conditioners usually tend to be one-sided. The A/C is expected to turn on with a flick of a switch. But experts would agree homeowners need to give back to their units and before the summer is the perfect time.
Whether tuning up an existing system or installing a new unit, early planning can save a homeowner from stress, and prolong a unit's life.
Brett Wright, President of D&H Air Conditioning and Heating, says “pre-planners” are people who tend to their units before summer. These buyers are able to research products and find the best unit without feeling rushed by a heat wave.
“It's critical to have time to make the right decisions,” said Wright, a SAHBA member. “You can correct the wrong color paint or sell a car, but A/C units generally have a life span of 10 years.”
Pre-planners have the time to investigate what type of system is right for their lifestyle, home and budget. Having time allows them to concentrate on different brands, their desired Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating, air quality options and who will install it.
The opposite of a pre-planner is a “reactor.” The reactor probably has a system with problems but waits until the unit stops working completely. Unfortunately, break downs inevitably happen during the hottest month of the year when they are running at full capacity.
“It's Fourth of July weekend, the mother-in-law is coming into town and the unit stops,” said Wright. “They don't get to pick the product or the company, rather the guy who can put something in the fastest.”
Last minute customers usually won't get the benefit of an in-home consultant. Skipping research and time with a professional will lead to quick, emotional decisions.
“In the long run, July customers are usually less happy,” said Wright. “Our happiest customers are the ones who have bought the most appropriate unit and know why they did.”
Buying an A/C system is one of the best investments to make, according to Wright. Especially since any where from 40% to 60% of a home's energy costs come from heating and cooling systems.
