Five New Year's Tips to a Well-Maintained Home

New Years for some means setting New Year's resolutions, whether losing weight or starting a new hobby. But here's one you may not have thought of: five tips to keep your home up to par:

1. Check Smoke Detectors

“Make sure your smoke detectors are working and have new batteries,” said Jon Fast of Rincon Safety Consultants. “This is your best defense in case of a fire.”

2. Spruce up Your Home

Whether a simple paint job or a complete remodel, make your home look its best.

“One of the cheapest and easiest ways to add value to a home is through a fresh coat of paint,” said Fast, SAHBA Safety Committee Chair. “Simple upgrades such as new kitchen countertops, bathroom fixtures or new lighting can make a big difference. However, if you're considering a major remodeling project, consult a professional.

3. Save More Energy

“Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs,” said Fast. “They use at least 2/3 less energy than standard incandescent bulbs, provide the same amount of light, and last 10 times longer.”

In winter, set your thermostat so it's warm when you're home, but turn it down when you leave.

“A few easy changes can make a big difference,” said Fast.

4. Maintain Appliances

“If you maintain your home appliances, you can save money and keep your home running smoothly and efficiently,” Fast said.

Seasonal furnace maintenance is important. Change or clean your furnace filters once a month. It also is important to clean the lint from your clothes dryer vent regularly.

“Clean the lint filter after each load and clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct periodically. A clogged vent will make your dryer less efficient, and it's a major fire hazard,” said Fast.

5. Get Organized

Garages and closets can become so cluttered they evolve into expensive storage space.

“Get rid of what you don't need. Look into shelving and storage options to make the most of your space,” said Fast.

Taking the time to make and keep these resolutions will ensure a happy and healthy New Year for you and your home.
