Summer Readings Can Provide a Few Good Ideas

Every few months, SAHBA recommends several books that may be of interest to readers such as home maintenance tips or incorporating design elements into the home. Here are several books SAHBA and the National Association of Home Builders recommends: Good House Parts: Creating a Great Home Piece By Piece, Creating the Inspired House: Discovering Your Place Called Home, and Patterns of Home: The Ten Essentials of Enduring Design.

Good House Parts: Creating a Great Home Piece By Piece by Dennis Wedlick is rooted in the idea that a good home does not need to follow every aspect of a particular architectural style. Wedlick details that there are ways to incorporate elements of two different style homes into one, such as a bungalow interior with a Victorian front porch. He also shares that a new home or renovation is inspired by how it will be lived in, by the family's lifestyle and by the owner's personal vision.

John Connell's Creating the Inspired House: Discovering Your Place Called Home includes over 300 color photographs that takes readers on a cross-country tour of over 20 homes – large and small, new and remodeled – with the homeowners, architects, and builders who collaborated on their creation. According to Connell, the best houses are about people, and Creating the Inspired House chronicles the stories of memorable characters immersed in the search for a place they can call home.

Patterns of Home: The Ten Essentials of Enduring Design defines over 200 design ideas that authors Max Jacobson, Murray Silverstein, and Barbara Winslow call patterns. The book is divided into ten chapters or patterns including inhabiting the site; capturing light; the flow through rooms; creating rooms, outside and in; and places in between.
