Home builders donate to six more Tucson organizations

In a pair of events over the holidays, members of the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association raised more than $37,000 for local organizations.

The annual SAHBA Carnival de Golfe Tournament raised $34,000-- $10,000 of which went to C-Path (the Critical Path Institute) and $6,000 each when to the Hearth Foundation, SAHBA Institute of Construction, St. Luke's Home and Tee Up for Tots. The tournament was sponsored by A.F. Sterling Homes, Cox Communications, First American Title, KB Home, K.R. Yarbrough Construction, SelectBuild, Southwest Gas, Whitney Burns Shutters, Kadon Land Co. and Stantec Consulting.

Meanwhile, the SAHBA Sales and Marketing Council raised more than $3,000 to buy gifts for 120 students who participated in a holiday party for Youth On Their Own, which assists youth whose lives have been disrupted by the lack of safe, permanent housing and parental support.

This is the second 2006 contribution to the organization, said Roger Yohem, vice president of SAHBA. During the fall, the association donated 100 backpacks filled with school supplies.

“We have a long standing relationship with them,” Yohem said.

All totaled, he said SAHBA contributes about $200,000 a year to more than a dozen local groups, not counting what individual members do on their own.

“It all ties back to our mission as the community builder, of doing more than just building homes,” Yohem said. “We all work here and live here. So, anything we can do to improve the quality of life in our community, we're ready and willing to get done.”
