SV council strengthens water conservation code
BY GENTRY BRASWELL
SIERRA VISTA — Some stronger water conservation code was approved by City Council at Thursday’s regular meeting. The proposal is now set for a 30-day public record period before becoming the law of the city.
However, the council removed language that would have mandated developers offer home buyers the option of having their homes pre-plumbed with a graywater discharge stub, where a single-family home’s washing machine would be connected. The council also amended the proposed code change to remove a vague restriction against “wasting water.” Councilman Bob Blanchard reiterated, the reason for striking that language is its vagueness.
Environmental Affairs Commissioner Gene Fenstermacher is concerned about the removal of the graywater clause by council, but some council members responded to him, that they expect to see the proposal again after more research is done.
“We need to be looking at reasons why we should be doing it, rather than reasons we should not be doing it,” Fenstermacher said. “Thank you for doing what your are doing on it, but let’s think positively about graywater.”
